Blacksburg, VA – Freezing conditions are gripping Virginia, with extreme cold weather continuing through Wednesday morning. Wind chills could fall as low as -12°F in higher elevations, creating hazardous outdoor conditions. Residents across the region are urged to take precautions to stay safe in this bitterly cold weather.
According to the National Weather Service, mountain areas near Blacksburg will experience lows between 0°F and 13°F tonight, with wind chills plummeting. Foothill and Piedmont areas will also face freezing conditions, with temperatures in the teens and wind chills as low as 5°F. These conditions can increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Officials recommend staying indoors, dressing in layers if venturing outside, and bringing pets inside.
The forecast predicts sunny skies and highs reaching 26°F on Wednesday, though winds between 6 to 8 mph will keep it brisk. Wednesday night’s lows will hover around 14°F, with mostly clear skies offering little relief from the cold. Conditions are expected to warm slightly by Thursday, with a high of 36°F, before dropping again Thursday night to 26°F.
Drivers should use caution on elevated roadways, including I-81 and local mountain passes, where icy conditions may develop. Friday offers a break, with highs near 44°F, but another weather system could bring rain or snow by Friday night into Saturday morning.
Residents should monitor forecasts and plan accordingly as Virginia continues to face harsh winter weather this week.
