Minneapolis, MN – Minnesota residents are preparing for a significant drop in temperatures as a prolonged cold snap kicks off the new year. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that subzero wind chills and single-digit highs will dominate much of the week, with snow showers possible in southern parts of the state.

According to the NWS Twin Cities, isolated snow showers could linger into early Wednesday morning. Temperatures are expected to drop steadily throughout the week, with highs near 30°F on Wednesday but plummeting to single digits by Friday. Overnight lows will reach 1°F in some areas, with wind chills making it feel even colder.

Residents should take precautions to protect against frostbite during this frigid stretch. If traveling, ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies, as icy conditions are possible on roads, particularly along major routes such as I-94 and I-35.

New Year’s Day will see partly sunny skies and a high of 22°F in Minneapolis, but the temperature will sharply decline Thursday, with highs only reaching 19°F. By Friday, highs are forecast to be around 15°F, with northwest winds contributing to harsh wind chills.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday and Sunday will remain bitterly cold, with highs in the mid-teens and lows in the single digits. Snow chances will diminish, but clear skies will not provide much relief from the arctic air.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors as Minnesota ushers in a much colder start to 2025.
