Newport, NC – Thunderstorms capable of producing strong winds and isolated tornadoes are forecast to move across North Carolina’s Crystal Coast starting Sunday evening. Residents in coastal communities, including Jacksonville and Morehead City, should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, showers will begin moving west to east Sunday afternoon, intensifying into thunderstorms by evening. Some storms may bring wind gusts of up to 60 mph and a brief, isolated tornado. The heaviest rain is expected overnight into early Monday, with precipitation chances exceeding 90% in many areas.
Drivers traveling along NC-24 or US-70 are urged to use caution, especially during nighttime hours when visibility may be reduced by heavy rain. Minor flooding could occur in low-lying areas, so residents should avoid water-covered roads.
Sunday’s high will reach 70°F with mild southerly winds at 9-16 mph, increasing with the storm. Rain tapers off by Monday morning, leaving partly sunny skies and cooler temperatures near 65°F.
Looking ahead to New Year’s Day, the forecast promises sunny skies and a high near 60°F, providing a welcome break from the stormy start to the week. Temperatures will drop further midweek, with overnight lows in the 30s and highs struggling to reach the 50s by Thursday.
