Champaign, IL – A rainy weekend lies ahead for Champaign and the surrounding central Illinois region, which may impact post-holiday travel. Rain is expected to persist into Saturday and Sunday, with scattered showers carrying over into Monday night. Drivers on I-74 and nearby roadways should exercise caution, especially during evening and overnight hours when patchy fog and slick conditions are most likely.
According to the National Weather Service, rainfall amounts through tonight should total under a half inch for most of central Illinois. Saturday will bring mostly cloudy skies, with highs reaching 60 degrees before cooling into the 40s overnight. Rain is likely late Saturday night into Sunday morning, potentially complicating early morning plans.
Sunday continues the wet pattern with rain likely throughout the day, accompanied by a high near 50 degrees. Winds up to 18 mph may create additional hazards, particularly for high-profile vehicles on open highways. Rain diminishes by Sunday night, leaving mostly cloudy skies and lows around 35 degrees.
A cooling trend starts Monday as temperatures dip into the mid-40s, with another round of rain expected Monday night. By Tuesday, highs will drop into the upper 40s before sharply cooling to lows near 27 degrees. New Year’s Day brings a brief respite with partly sunny skies, but travelers and residents should prepare for much colder conditions into the first week of January.
Stay updated on changing conditions and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain or fog. Check road conditions and forecasts before heading out.
