Hanford, CA – A winter storm is bringing heavy snow to the Sierra Nevada this weekend, creating hazardous conditions on key travel routes.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall will continue through Saturday evening, with elevations above 6,000 feet expected to receive 4 to 12 inches. Areas such as Tioga Pass, Tuolumne Meadows, and Devils Postpile are at the highest risk of significant accumulation. Highways including 120, 41, and 180 will likely experience icy conditions, reduced visibility, and possible closures. Travelers are urged to delay plans or equip vehicles with chains and winter supplies.
Cold temperatures will persist throughout the weekend, increasing the chance of black ice, particularly during overnight hours. By Sunday, conditions are expected to improve with mostly sunny skies returning to the region.
The National Weather Service advises drivers to stay updated on weather and road conditions before heading into the mountains. Emergency kits, warm clothing, and ample fuel are strongly recommended for those traveling into impacted areas.
While the storm brings travel challenges, it is expected to boost the region’s snowpack, offering much-needed water resources for the coming year.
