San Francisco, CA – Coastal areas of Northern California remain under a High Surf Advisory through 6 p.m. Wednesday as waves as high as 22 feet are expected to impact the shoreline. Officials are urging residents, travelers, and beachgoers to remain cautious during the advisory, which includes San Francisco Peninsula Coast, Point Reyes National Seashore, and the Big Sur Coast.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the advisory follows a High Surf Warning that expired Tuesday evening. Despite improving conditions, the large swells and strong rip currents continue to pose a significant risk to inexperienced swimmers and surfers. Cold water shock from sudden immersion can lead to life-threatening situations, officials said.

Beach visitors are strongly advised to stay out of the water and avoid piers, jetties, and other waterside infrastructure. Large waves could sweep people into the ocean without warning, increasing the risk of injury or drowning.

Looking ahead, Northern California’s weather will shift mid-week, with rain returning late Wednesday night and continuing into the weekend. Thursday will see highs near 60°F, with rain becoming more persistent by Friday and Saturday. Travelers planning post-holiday trips should prepare for wet roads and reduced visibility, especially on Highway 1 and other coastal routes.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and use extra caution near beaches through the advisory period.
