Chicago, IL – Light snow is expected to move into northern Illinois Thursday night, with accumulations of a few inches likely north of Interstate 80. The snow, combined with gusty winds, may create slippery travel conditions, particularly during the Friday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service, snow showers are anticipated to begin late Thursday afternoon, intensifying overnight. Areas closer to the Illinois-Wisconsin border and north of I-80 are most likely to see measurable snowfall, with totals of up to 2-3 inches possible. Winds from the north could further reduce visibility, making travel hazardous for morning commuters.

Temperatures will hover in the low-to-mid 30s on Thursday before dropping into the upper 20s overnight. Wind gusts up to 20-25 mph may create drifting snow in open areas. By Friday, snow showers will taper off by midday, but roads could remain slick as temperatures struggle to rise above freezing.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, allowing extra time for travel, especially on untreated roads and highways north of I-80. Road crews will likely work overnight to address impacted areas, but early travelers should use caution.

Heading into the weekend, conditions will improve. Saturday is expected to bring partly sunny skies and colder temperatures, with highs near 29 degrees. Sunday will warm slightly to the low 30s under mostly sunny skies, providing a dry break for the region.
