Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan is experiencing a significant lake-effect snowstorm, with accumulations expected to exceed 18 inches by Friday morning. Heavy snowfall and strong winds are creating dangerous conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord, an additional 8 to 12 inches of snow will fall overnight, particularly affecting Chippewa County in the Upper Peninsula. Gusts of 15 to 25 mph will reduce visibility, creating whiteout conditions in some areas. Localized areas may see totals surpassing 18 inches.
The NWS also warns of cold wind chills overnight. Temperatures will dip into the single digits, with wind chills dropping below zero at times. Dangerous travel conditions will persist, with blowing and drifting snow reducing visibility even after snowfall stops.
Drivers are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel. Those venturing out should prepare for extreme cold and potential delays.
The storm is expected to ease Friday morning, though the cold will linger into the weekend. Residents are advised to monitor forecasts and stay prepared.
