Chicago, IL – Hazardous marine conditions are impacting Lake Michigan as gale-force winds and heavy freezing spray warnings remain in effect for the southern two-thirds of the lake. Mariners are advised to stay in port and avoid navigating the affected areas through Thursday morning due to severe weather risks.

According to the National Weather Service, west winds of 20 to 40 knots, with gusts reaching gale force, are generating waves of 7 to 12 feet. Heavy freezing spray is expected to accumulate at rates of up to two centimeters per hour, posing serious risks to vessels by rapidly accreting ice on decks and equipment, potentially compromising stability and functionality.

The Gale Warning remains active until 9 a.m. CST Thursday for areas including Gary to Michigan City, Indiana, and until 4 p.m. EST Thursday for northern sections from St. Joseph to Manistee, Michigan. Heavy Freezing Spray Warnings are effective from late Wednesday evening through Thursday morning, extending into the afternoon for certain northern areas.

Mariners are urged to secure their vessels, remain in safe harbor, or alter routes to avoid these hazardous conditions. Ice buildup can disable mechanical systems, reduce visibility, and increase the risk of capsizing.

Stay updated with the latest marine forecasts and exercise extreme caution if navigating the lake.
