Duluth, MN — Minnesotans along Lake Superior are preparing for heavy lake-effect snow and dangerous wind chills Thursday into Friday morning. The National Weather Service warns of blowing snow and subzero temperatures impacting travel, particularly on Highway 61.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, snowfall totals could reach up to 6 inches in some areas, with strong northwest winds gusting between 20-30 mph creating whiteout conditions. Temperatures are forecast to plunge to -20°F Thursday night, with wind chills as low as -40°F, increasing the risk of frostbite in minutes. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect through Thursday night.

The most heavily affected areas will include Duluth, Two Harbors, and Silver Bay, with visibility reduced to under a mile in some locations. Commuters along Highway 61 are urged to allow extra travel time and avoid non-essential trips. Hazardous conditions are expected to last through Friday morning before improving over the weekend.

Looking ahead, Thursday will be the coldest day of the week, with a gradual warming trend starting Saturday. By Sunday, temperatures may rise into the mid-20s, bringing some relief. However, residents are advised to remain cautious and prepare for the ongoing impact of cold and snow.

Officials recommend checking road conditions at 511mn.org before traveling and dressing in multiple layers to avoid hypothermia or frostbite. Stay indoors when possible, and ensure pets are protected from the cold.
