Alleghany County, NC – A flood advisory is in effect through noon today as heavy rainfall continues across the region. Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads and prepare for minor flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service, between 1 and 3 inches of rain have already fallen in parts of Alleghany, Surry, and Wilkes Counties. An additional inch of rainfall is expected, heightening the risk of water pooling in poor drainage areas and near streams such as Anglin Branch and the Ararat River.
Officials advise drivers to turn around if they encounter flooded roads, noting that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. With leaves potentially blocking storm drains, urban areas may see rapid water accumulation.
In Mount Airy, Fairview, and surrounding towns, emergency responders are on alert as road conditions worsen. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and report any flooding or mudslides to the National Weather Service.
Looking ahead, the rain is expected to taper off by tonight, but slippery roadways and standing water will remain a concern. The region’s five-day forecast predicts cooler, drier weather beginning Thursday, with highs in the low 50s and a chance of frost overnight by the weekend.
