Grand Rapids, MI – Snowfall continues to blanket southwest Michigan as a winter weather advisory remains in effect through Thursday evening, bringing dangerous travel conditions to the region. Areas near US-31, including Mason and Oceana counties, have reported rapidly deteriorating visibility and snow-covered roads overnight.
According to the National Weather Service, up to five inches of snow accumulation is expected, with gusts reaching 35 mph in some areas. The advisory includes Barry, Kalamazoo, Kent, and Van Buren counties. Commuters and residents should prepare for slick roads, particularly on bridges and overpasses, as freezing temperatures will intensify icing.
The snow is expected to taper slightly Thursday afternoon, but travel hazards will remain. Visibility may fluctuate due to strong winds and blowing snow. Lake-effect snow bands could develop again during the evening, primarily affecting areas near the lakeshore.
Looking ahead, temperatures will plummet Wednesday night, with lows around 14°F and wind chills near zero. Friday brings drier conditions, but daytime highs will stay in the mid-20s, with chances of scattered snow showers returning by evening. Weekend temperatures will rise slightly, with a mix of rain and snow possible Saturday night.
Motorists should monitor road conditions closely, avoid unnecessary travel, and equip their vehicles with emergency supplies. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on local advisories through the National Weather Service and other official sources.
