Chicago, IL – Illinois’ Winter Weather Rule, aimed at protecting vulnerable households from utility disconnections during cold months, went into effect Dec. 1 and will remain active through March 31, according to the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC).
The rule prohibits gas and electric disconnections for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) participants, as well as veterans and military personnel using heat as a primary utility. Protections also apply during forecasted temperatures of 32°F or below.
According to the ICC, residents with overdue balances should contact their utility provider for a Deferred Payment Agreement (DPA) or LIHEAP assistance.
