Miramichi, NB – An extremely rare earthquake shook the upper East Coast near the Maine-New Brunswick border early Monday morning, surprising residents across the region.

The magnitude 3.5 quake struck at 2:36 a.m., centered 84 kilometers west of Miramichi at a depth of 5 kilometers. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, light tremors were felt across New Brunswick and as far south as Maine, a region where seismic activity is almost unheard of.

The earthquake reached Level IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, causing indoor vibrations and slight movements of household items. While no injuries or damage were reported, the event startled residents in both Canada and the northeastern U.S.

Seismic activity in this area is exceedingly rare, making Monday’s quake an unusual occurrence for both New Brunswick and Maine. Experts say the event serves as a reminder that earthquakes, though infrequent, can happen anywhere.

Seismologists are monitoring for potential aftershocks, though none have been reported. Officials encourage anyone who felt the earthquake to share their experience through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” platform to aid data collection efforts.
