WICHITA, KS — Residents of Wichita and surrounding Kansas communities should prepare for potential flash flooding Tuesday as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall sweep across central and eastern Kansas. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Wichita, with storms likely to intensify early in the morning, potentially causing localized flooding on saturated grounds.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, radar projections indicate heavy rainfall spreading northeast from the south beginning around 8 a.m. Storms are expected to increase in coverage by mid-morning, bringing significant rain over already saturated soil. This raises the risk of flooding on local roadways, particularly along major routes like I-35 and I-135. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and to exercise caution in low-lying areas prone to water accumulation.
Extended Forecast for the Week
Following Tuesday’s storms, rain is likely to continue into Monday night and Tuesday morning, with a slight chance of showers persisting into the afternoon. Temperatures will reach a high of 64°F on Tuesday, cooling down overnight to the low 40s as skies clear gradually.
By Wednesday, drier conditions are forecasted, bringing sunny skies and a high near 61°F. Wednesday night should remain partly cloudy with a low around 44°F. A slight chance of rain may return Thursday afternoon as temperatures peak around 60°F.
Safety Precautions
The Wichita office of the National Weather Service advises residents to monitor weather alerts closely, particularly those living in flood-prone areas. Drivers should be vigilant and avoid flooded intersections and highways, as floodwaters can conceal hazards and create dangerous conditions.
