Jackson, MS – Mississippi residents face a heightened fire danger today and Friday, with a limited threat level due to sunny skies and seasonably cool weather. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson warns that the dry conditions could lead to increased wildfire risks, prompting caution among residents.
According to the NWS, the fire danger will persist through Friday, with extra vigilance required during open burning. With limited moisture and warm temperatures, vegetation may quickly ignite, potentially spreading fires along major roadways and rural areas. Authorities advise avoiding outdoor burning activities and to dispose of cigarette butts in proper containers to reduce fire hazards.
Today, Jackson and surrounding areas are forecasted to reach highs near 70°F, with sunny skies and northeast winds at around 5 mph. Tonight, temperatures will drop to a cool 44°F under clear skies. The sunny weather will continue Friday, with similar temperatures and a nighttime low of 47°F.
The NWS emphasizes safety precautions, urging residents to heed local burn bans and ensure trailer chains are not dragging on roadways, as this can produce sparks. Drivers on highways like I-55 and I-20 are reminded to remain vigilant, as small sparks could easily start fires in the dry conditions.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday and Sunday will bring continued clear skies, with highs reaching 76°F on Saturday and climbing to 79°F on Sunday. Temperatures will remain comfortable through early next week, with Monday expected to reach 80°F under sunny skies.
