Des Moines, IA – A Red Flag Warning is in effect today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for much of central and eastern Iowa due to strong winds and low humidity. These conditions will create a very high to extreme fire danger across the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), winds will be sustained between 20-30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph in some areas. Humidity levels will drop as low as 15%, significantly increasing the risk of fires spreading rapidly, especially in dry cropland and areas where harvest remains incomplete. Affected areas include Buchanan, Linn, Polk, and Jefferson counties.
Residents are strongly urged to avoid outdoor burning and any activities that could generate sparks. Fire officials stress that any fires that develop under these conditions will be difficult to control and could spread quickly. Precautions such as clearing dry vegetation and securing loose items are recommended.
The NWS advises staying alert to local emergency notifications and updates. Fire conditions will improve later this evening as winds decrease, but the fire risk remains high until the warning expires at 7 p.m.
