Wichita, KS – A freeze warning remains in effect for central and south-central Kansas, lasting until 9 a.m. Wednesday. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees are expected overnight, affecting cities such as Salina, Hutchinson, and Great Bend. The National Weather Service issued the warning due to the potential damage to crops, sensitive plants, and unprotected outdoor plumbing.
According to the NWS, residents should take precautionary measures, such as covering plants, disconnecting garden hoses, and insulating exposed pipes. The warning comes as a cold front sweeps through the region, bringing much cooler temperatures compared to previous weeks. The NWS advises that frost and freeze conditions could be particularly damaging to late-season crops and other tender vegetation.
Local farmers are especially urged to take steps to protect their harvests, as the freezing temperatures could impact agricultural yields. In urban areas, residents should also consider bringing potted plants indoors. As temperatures rise slightly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, the cold snap is expected to persist through the week, with overnight lows remaining in the 30s. This freeze marks the first significant cold spell of the fall season in Kansas.
