Atlanta, GA — Communities in Georgia and North Carolina are being urged to prepare for catastrophic inland flooding as Hurricane Helene approaches. NOAA warns that although the hurricane will make landfall on Florida’s northwest coast, its most severe impact could extend hundreds of miles inland.

According to NOAA, Georgia and North Carolina will face torrential rain, flash flooding, and landslides, especially in metro Atlanta and western North Carolina. Up to 18 inches of rainfall is expected in some areas, which have already experienced heavy rainfall in recent days. This poses significant flood risks, with saturated grounds and high rivers increasing the danger.

NOAA highlights that inland flooding remains the leading cause of death from tropical cyclones. Communities should heed evacuation orders and stay off flooded roads.
