Chicago Area Sees Higher Than Normal Rainfall During Summer 2024

Chicago, IL – Summer 2024 brought more rainfall than usual to the Chicagoland area, despite warmer-than-normal temperatures. Chicago O’Hare recorded 11.59 inches of rain, 0.47 inches below the seasonal norm. However, the city still experienced higher rainfall than in previous summers. Rockford saw even more significant rainfall, totaling 14.48 inches, which is 1.25 inches above average.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, August alone witnessed 2.60 inches of rainfall in Chicago, marking 1.65 inches below normal. Meanwhile, Rockford received 2.22 inches, falling 1.97 inches short of typical August levels. Despite the below-normal precipitation in August, the overall summer rainfall in the Chicagoland area was substantial.

The above-normal rainfall comes alongside temperatures that also exceeded seasonal averages. Chicago recorded an average summer temperature of 74.6°F, while Rockford registered 72.9°F. Both figures were slightly above the norm, indicating a warm and wet season. These conditions affected local agriculture, outdoor events, and water management in the region, underscoring the importance of adapting to changing weather patterns.
