South Bend, IN – A 22-year-old suspect has been arrested following an early morning shooting in South Bend that left two people injured. The incident occurred Sunday at approximately 2:45 a.m. as South Bend Police patrolled near Johnson and Rupel Streets. Officers on duty heard gunfire and were soon alerted by the city’s ShotSpotter system to shots fired on the 600 block of North Johnson Street.
According to the South Bend Police Department, while officers were investigating the scene, they received notification that two gunshot victims had arrived at Memorial Hospital for treatment. Both victims’ conditions remain undisclosed.
The suspect, identified as Tawan Wilkins, was arrested by the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit on two preliminary allegations linked to the shooting. Wilkins was transported to St. Joseph County Jail, where he awaits formal charges from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
