New Mexico — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a weather alert for New Mexico as a ridge of high pressure continues to dominate the region, bringing a combination of triple-digit heat and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. The lowland areas, including cities such as Las Cruces and Silver City, are expected to experience extreme temperatures ranging from 100 to 105°F.
According to the NWS in El Paso, TX, the mountainous regions and areas along the Continental Divide may see showers and thunderstorms later this afternoon. Despite these storm risks, the majority of the state will remain hot and quiet throughout the day, with temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above normal for mid-August.
Looking ahead, the heat wave is expected to persist through the week, with slightly lower temperatures but still reaching the upper 90s in most areas. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and remain vigilant for potential storms, especially in the afternoon and early evening hours.
