Southern Illinois – A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Southern Illinois, effective until midnight. Residents are urged to stay alert as scattered storms could bring damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, large hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, and the potential for tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm system is expected to intensify as it moves eastward, posing significant risks to life and property. Meteorologists warn that the storms could develop rapidly, leaving little time for preparation. In addition to the immediate threat of severe weather, there is also a possibility of flash flooding in low-lying areas due to heavy rainfall. Local officials are advising residents to monitor weather alerts closely, secure outdoor items, and ensure they have a safe shelter plan in place.

The NWS emphasizes that a severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather, and residents should be prepared to take action if warnings are issued. Those in the watch area should remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep electronic devices charged in case of power outages.
