Burlington, VT – An air quality alert is in effect for Vermont from midnight tonight through Friday at midnight, with officials warning that conditions could become unhealthy for sensitive groups. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the alert as concentrations of PM 2.5, a fine particulate matter typically produced by wildfire smoke, are expected to increase overnight.
According to the NWS, smoke from wildfires in western Canada will drift over Vermont on Friday, leading to diminished air quality statewide. The smoke is expected to elevate PM 2.5 levels into the range considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including those with respiratory issues, young children, and the elderly.
Residents are urged to plan accordingly, particularly those in vulnerable populations. Health experts recommend limiting outdoor activities, keeping windows closed, and using air purifiers if available. The air quality is anticipated to improve after Friday as the smoke dissipates.
