
Wheat Ridge, CO – A fatal crash on I-70 in Wheat Ridge Thursday morning resulted in three deaths and the closure of a major section of the highway. The incident, which occurred shortly after 8:20 a.m., involved a semi-truck carrying large pipes, leading to a multi-vehicle collision.
According to the Wheat Ridge Police Department, the semi-truck, traveling eastbound on I-70 near Ward Road, lost its load, causing large pipes to spill across the westbound lanes. A passenger vehicle heading westbound collided with the debris, resulting in the deaths of three occupants. Two additional passengers were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, and the truck driver was also hospitalized.
Authorities report that at least three other vehicles were involved in the crash. The incident has led to the closure of westbound I-70 at Kipling Street and eastbound I-70 at Highway 6. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes as the investigation and cleanup continue.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is working with local emergency services, including the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Fairmount Fire Protection District, to clear the road and manage the scene. CDOT urges drivers to avoid the area and check for updates before traveling.
