Chicago, IL – Residents of northern Illinois should brace for potential severe weather today and tonight. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a forecast indicating a high chance of thunderstorms, which could lead to severe weather conditions. The uncertainty remains high, but if storms congeal this morning across Minnesota and Iowa, severe threats could develop mainly west and south of Chicago this afternoon.
According to the NWS, the primary threats this afternoon include damaging winds, large hail, and torrential rainfall that may cause flash flooding. The most critical period for these storms is anticipated to be between 3 PM and 9 PM. Additionally, another round of severe weather could develop overnight across much of the region, although the forecast remains uncertain.
Residents are advised to stay updated on the weather conditions throughout the day and into the night. The potential overnight storms could bring quarter-sized hail and heavy rain, further increasing the risk of flash flooding in affected areas. The storm motion is expected to be towards the southeast at speeds of 20-30 mph.
