Central Illinois – Residents in central Illinois should prepare for the possibility of isolated severe storms this afternoon. The National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK, reports a 5% chance of watch issuance for severe weather, with the main threats being damaging wind gusts and hail.
According to the NWS, regional radar indicates several convective clusters moving southeast, aligned with an east-west oriented cold front. Surface heating ahead of these clusters has led to significant destabilization, with mixed-layer convective available potential energy (MLCAPE) nearing 1500 J/kg. This instability is expected to fuel additional storm development along the front.
While the effective bulk shear, which influences storm organization, remains to the north behind the front, the low-level lapse rates near 8.5 C/km in the region may result in a few strong cells capable of producing severe weather. Residents should stay informed on the latest weather updates and be prepared to take necessary precautions
