Charleston, WV – West Virginia is in for a wet start to the week as heavy rains and thunderstorms move into the area from Kentucky. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning for localized flooding and frequent lightning. Residents are urged to be cautious and avoid flooded areas.

According to the NWS, the greatest chance for higher rainfall totals today into tonight is near and east of the mountains. However, heavy thunderstorms could occur anywhere, leading to higher rain totals than anticipated. The risk of localized flash flooding is significant, and smaller creeks could rise quickly in heavier thunderstorms. The NWS advises, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” highlighting the danger of driving through flooded roads.

The forecast for Charleston shows a 100% chance of rain today, with temperatures ranging from 67°F to 81°F. On Tuesday, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy with a high of 85°F. Rain chances return midweek, with a 50% chance on Wednesday and 55% on Thursday, accompanied by temperatures in the low 80s. Friday offers a brief respite with partly cloudy skies and a high of 84°F, but rain is expected to return on Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the mid-80s.
