Grand Island, NY – Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia is warning the public about a new twist to the “gift card” scam targeting residents.
According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday, a Grand Island woman received a call from someone claiming to be from the DEA. The caller alleged that a vehicle registered to the woman was involved in smuggling 22 pounds of cocaine across the U.S.-Mexico border and demanded four $500 gift cards. The woman did not comply and reported the incident to authorities.
Residents are advised to hang up if they receive such calls and contact the Erie County Sheriff’s Office at (716) 858-2903. Law enforcement will never request gift cards to resolve legal matters.
