Omaha, NE – Central Nebraska is preparing for severe thunderstorms expected to hit tonight, with the highest threat period between 9 PM and 3 AM. The National Weather Service Omaha/Valley has issued a severe weather alert, cautioning residents about the potential for damaging winds, flooding, and brief tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a 70-90% chance of thunderstorms across the region. The forecast indicates a 5-30% likelihood of individual storms reaching severe levels. The primary risks include wind gusts up to 80 mph and localized flash flooding. Hail up to one inch in diameter is also possible.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. It is recommended to secure outdoor objects that could become projectiles in high winds and to stay indoors during the peak threat period. Those in flood-prone areas should be prepared to move to higher ground if necessary.

The severe weather threat covers a wide area, including cities such as Norfolk, Grand Island, and Hastings. Emergency management officials advise having multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including weather radios and mobile alerts.
