Des Moines, IA – On this day 77 years ago, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin experienced an extraordinary weather event as a late spring snowstorm blanketed the region.
On May 28, 1947, Des Moines recorded only a trace of snow, but northern parts of Iowa saw several inches, with Le Mars receiving a remarkable 10 inches. According to the US National Weather Service, widespread reports of tree and power line damage due to the heavy, wet snow were noted across the affected areas.
The historic storm, spanning May 27-29, 1947, impacted several states, with Harrison, NE, and Alliance, NE, recording 12 inches of snow. Wisconsin also saw significant snowfall, with Appleton and Pine River reporting 8.8 and 8.4 inches, respectively. The weather service hopes not to see a repeat of such an event anytime soon.
