Elmhurst, IL – Route 83 was temporarily closed Wednesday morning following an alleged domestic violence incident at Portillo’s involving a man armed with two large knives.

The incident began around 5:30 a.m. when Elmhurst police responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic-related attack inside the closed restaurant at 155 S. IL Route 83. According to Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McLean, the 32-year-old male suspect, part of a subcontracted cleaning crew, allegedly attacked his domestic partner with two large knives. The female victim and another woman were able to escape the restaurant and seek help from a passing motorist before calling 911.

Upon arrival, officers found evidence of the assault and attempted to make contact with the suspect, who remained inside the building. The suspect did not respond to telephone or verbal communications. By 8:30 a.m., police entered the restaurant and found the suspect suffering from a self-inflicted injury.

He was transported to an area hospital for treatment and remains in police custody. The female victim sustained a minor injury. The Elmhurst Crossing Shopping Center was closed until approximately 9:30 a.m. as evidence technicians worked at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, with criminal charges pending.
