Grand Rapids, MI – The National Weather Service has issued a critical alert for dangerous waves and currents along the Lake Michigan shoreline, primarily impacting beaches in Michigan from St. Joseph to Manistee. Strong southwest winds, reaching 15-25 mph, are expected to generate hazardous conditions throughout the day.

According to the NWS, waves are forecasted to peak at over 4 feet, creating a high risk for swimmers. The most dangerous conditions will be on the south side of piers, where currents will be strongest. Beachgoers in these areas are strongly advised to avoid swimming and exercise extreme caution.

This alert is in effect until 8:00 PM, with conditions anticipated to improve as waves subside from south to north in the evening. Local authorities will be monitoring the situation closely and enforcing swimming restrictions to ensure public safety.

In addition to Michigan beaches, the alert extends to northwest Indiana and the Chicago area. While the primary focus is on Michigan, beachgoers in these regions should also exercise caution and stay updated with local weather reports.

Beach patrols and local authorities are urging all visitors to heed warnings and follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents.
