Gridley, IL – A rescue operation in Livingston County Thursday afternoon saved a man who became trapped up to his chest in a grain bin on North 600 East Road. The coordinated effort by multiple fire departments helped stabilize and safely remove the man, who is now in stable condition.

Grain bins are crucial for the storage and management of harvested grain, yet they pose significant risks. The dangers include quicksand-like engulfment and the potential for oxygen-deficient environments. Safety protocols are critically important in these settings, and experts urge the adoption of strict measures. These include the utilization of safety harnesses, the implementation of a buddy system, and maintaining constant communication.

The hazards of working in grain bins are underscored by troubling statistics. According to a Summary of U.S. Agricultural Confined Space-Related Injuries and Fatalities, more than 300 cases of green entrapment have been reported in the past decade alone, with 20 seconds standing between life and death.  In 2021, there were 29 reported cases of grain entrapment in the U.S., resulting in 11 deaths.
