Kankakee County, IL – Residents across Illinois and Indiana are on high alert as the National Weather Service warns of potential flooding due to melting snowpack and river ice jams, particularly south of I-80.

The Kankakee River, already at a heightened level, could breach its banks as warming temperatures are set to release the water equivalent of up to two inches from the surrounding snowpack.

According to experts, the frozen soil is less able to absorb the runoff, increasing the likelihood of flooding in low-lying areas. Counties in both states, including Eastern Will, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, and Kankakee in Illinois, along with Benton, Jasper, Lake, Newton, and Porter in Indiana, are advised to monitor the situation closely. The weather service emphasizes that the rapid melting, combined with the potential for ice jams to break, creates unpredictable and rapidly changing conditions.

Local authorities are preparing for emergency responses, and residents in vulnerable areas are urged to review their safety plans and stay informed through local weather channels. The flood watch extends through the upcoming week, with community members reminded to avoid water-covered roadways and to secure their properties against the encroaching waters.
