Attu Station, Alaska – A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck deep beneath the Aleutian Islands chain Tuesday afternoon, prompting monitoring across western Alaska but producing no immediate reports of damage or tsunami risk.

According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, the quake hit at 12:45 p.m. UTC, about 180 kilometers south-southeast of Attu Station at a depth of 46.1 kilometers. The depth reduced the likelihood of strong surface shaking, especially in sparsely populated areas of the western Aleutians.

Seismic sensors across the region detected the event quickly, with light to moderate shaking expected near the epicenter. Communities farther east, including Adak, were unlikely to feel significant movement. No infrastructure impacts or disruptions to air or marine routes were reported in the hours following the quake.

Emergency managers continue to monitor for aftershocks, which can follow events of this size within the next several hours to days. Residents and mariners in the Aleutians are encouraged to review earthquake safety plans and ensure communication devices remain charged.

No tsunami advisories have been issued, and officials say the situation remains stable. Additional updates will be released if aftershock activity increases or conditions change.
