Massachusetts – Bright skies early are giving way to a volatile setup, and by mid-afternoon, storms could quickly turn severe across the Boston region, disrupting travel and daily routines.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, scattered severe thunderstorms are expected between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., with the highest risk focused across northwest Massachusetts and northern Connecticut. Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat, strong enough to down trees and power lines.

Temperatures climbing into the mid-70s are fueling instability, allowing storms to intensify as they move east. Cities including Springfield, Worcester, and eventually Boston could see storms weaken slightly, but not before producing bursts of heavy rain and gusty winds.

Major roadways like I-90, I-93, and I-95 could see sudden slowdowns during the late afternoon commute. Visibility may drop quickly in heavy rain, and debris from downed branches could create hazards. Plan extra travel time and avoid unnecessary trips during peak storm hours.

Meteorologists now tracking this system say storms will develop inland first, then track east toward Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts by evening. Conditions may change rapidly within minutes as storms pass through.

Have a plan in place. Charge devices, secure outdoor items, and stay alert for warnings. Even isolated storms could produce significant impacts.

By midweek, a broader pattern of showers continues, but today’s storm window carries the greatest severe threat.
