Stevens Pass, WA – Travel across the Cascade passes will deteriorate quickly by midday Tuesday as snow begins piling up, creating hazardous driving conditions through the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday for western Chelan County, including Stevens Pass, Stehekin, and Holden Village. Areas above 3,500 feet could see 6 to 12 inches of snow, while lower elevations may still pick up up to 3 inches. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph, reducing visibility on exposed roadways.

Stevens Pass along U.S. 2 is expected to see the most significant impacts, with snow-covered pavement and slick conditions developing by early afternoon. Backcountry routes near Stehekin and Holden Village will become increasingly difficult to navigate as snowfall intensifies into the evening commute.

Drivers are urged to prepare for winter conditions by carrying chains, emergency supplies, and allowing extra travel time. Sudden visibility drops and icy turns will make mountain driving especially dangerous.

Snow is expected to taper off early Wednesday, but lingering slick roads could continue to impact travel into the morning hours.
