Champaign, IL – Illinois State Police and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Department are urging residents to postpone unnecessary road travel today (1/22) and into Tuesday morning (1/23) due to hazardous road conditions caused by ongoing freezing rain.

All Champaign County buildings are closed today in response to the icy weather. The Illinois Department of Transportation reports ice accumulations of one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch, particularly east of I-39 and north of I-74, leading to slippery roads and the potential for downed branches and power lines.

Authorities advise reducing speed, increasing following distance, and always wearing seatbelts for those who must travel. With roads becoming hazardous tonight, the public is encouraged to check regular updates and travel with caution.
