BEECHER, IL — Commuters traveling through the rural corridor south of Beecher will face a new traffic pattern starting this week as officials move to address a high-risk intersection at the border of Will and Kankakee counties.
A permanent 4-way stop and rumble strips are being installed at the intersection of Route 1 and County Line Road. The immediate safety measures follow a coordinated push by local law enforcement and emergency responders to prevent further accidents at the site. A Will County woman was reportedly involved in a serious collision in the area recently, prompting local officials to expedite an interim safety plan while a long-term infrastructure overhaul is prepared for 2028.
According to Will County Coroner Laurie H. Summers on Monday, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Will County DOT have already begun the installation process. Rumble strips were successfully placed on County Line Road for east-west traffic last week to alert drivers approaching the crossing. According to the Coroner’s office, the transition to a full 4-way stop intersection is scheduled to be completed by the end of April, significantly altering the current right-of-way flow.
According to the official press release, the urgent safety upgrades were made possible through the collaboration of the Beecher Fire, Police, and EMS departments, along with Kankakee County Coroner Gessner and Sheriff Downey. Local lawmakers, including Senator Joyce and Representative Haas, were also credited with pushing for the expedited timeline. According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the 4-way stop will remain as the interim traffic control measure until a more permanent construction project is initiated in 2028 to modernize the intersection.
