Naperville, Illinois – Drivers heading to some of Illinois’ busiest DMV facilities could be turned away at the door if they don’t have an appointment, as state officials tighten rules to manage long lines and high demand.

According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, locations in Naperville and Lombard now require appointments for most driver services, including license renewals, REAL ID applications, and road tests. The change is designed to reduce wait times and improve service flow, but it means walk-ins are no longer accepted for those services at these sites.

Residents across DuPage County and surrounding suburbs are already seeing the impact, with fewer lines outside facilities but increased demand for online booking slots. Officials urge drivers to schedule visits in advance through the official state website and arrive on time to avoid losing their spot.

Some services remain available without an appointment, including license plate sticker renewals and disability placards, which can still be handled on a walk-in basis.

State officials say the appointment system could expand to additional locations if demand continues to strain resources. Drivers are encouraged to check requirements before visiting, as policies may vary by facility.
