Abilene, Texas – Drivers across West Central Texas could hit wet roads and reduced visibility within the next 12 to 18 hours as storm coverage ramps up to as high as 75% late Tuesday night into the Wednesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, rain chances climb sharply after sunset Tuesday, with widespread showers and thunderstorms expanding across Abilene, San Angelo, and surrounding communities through early Wednesday. Peak precipitation probabilities range from 65% to 75%, increasing the risk for slick stretches along I-20, US-83, and area farm-to-market roads.
Cities including Sweetwater, Brownwood, and Ballinger are also in the higher-impact zone, where repeated rounds of rain could slow early morning travel. While severe weather is not explicitly outlined, brief downpours may reduce visibility below a half-mile at times and create ponding on roadways.
Temperatures remain warm ahead of the system, with highs pushing into the mid to upper 80s through Friday. Abilene is expected to reach near 88°F before a cold front shifts conditions late this weekend, dropping highs into the low 70s by Sunday.
Residents should charge devices, allow extra commute time Wednesday morning, and avoid low-water crossings during heavier rainfall. Additional advisories may be issued as storm timing becomes more precise through midweek.
