Minnesota – The air feels calm across Minneapolis early this afternoon, but that quiet is expected to break quickly as storms begin to develop later today. Skies may still show sun at times, but the atmosphere is already primed for stronger activity.

According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening, with some storms capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and even a tornado across parts of central and southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Heavy rain is also possible in stronger cells.

Across Minneapolis, St. Paul, and surrounding suburbs, drivers along I-94, I-35, and Highway 169 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions later today. Storms may intensify quickly, bringing sudden downpours, lightning, and reduced visibility. Plan ahead and consider adjusting travel during the late afternoon and evening window.

Conditions may deteriorate quickly once storms begin. Wind gusts could pick up sharply near stronger cells, and hail may create hazardous driving conditions in localized areas. Keep mobile alerts enabled and have a safe indoor location ready if warnings are issued.

By Tuesday, the pattern becomes less intense, though scattered showers remain possible with highs near the upper 60s. A brief break follows before additional rain chances return midweek, including a chance for thunderstorms again Wednesday.

Temperatures dip into the upper 60s midweek before warming back into the low 70s by Thursday. Looking ahead, signs point to milder spring air returning late week, with above-normal temperatures gradually building.
