Georgia Weather Alert: 30% Humidity and Breezy Winds Raise Fire Risk in Atlanta Today

Georgia – Dry air and a steady breeze are quietly setting the stage for dangerous fire conditions across the Atlanta area this afternoon. What feels like a pleasant spring day can quickly turn risky as vegetation dries out and winds pick up.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for parts of north Georgia, with relative humidity dropping to around 30 percent and winds between 5 and 15 mph supporting critical fire conditions. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged as fires could spread rapidly.

Across metro Atlanta, including Fulton, Cobb, and DeKalb counties, the risk is highest in grassy areas, wooded edges, and locations with dry brush. Even small sparks from lawn equipment or discarded cigarettes can ignite fires that move quickly with the wind. Avoid any activity that could produce flames or sparks today.

While skies stay mostly sunny and temperatures rise into the low 80s, the combination of warmth and low humidity will keep fire danger elevated through the afternoon and evening hours.

Looking ahead, the pattern shifts toward warmer conditions. Highs climb into the mid-to-upper 80s by midweek, then reach near 90°F by Friday under continued sunshine. Dry conditions may linger, which could prolong elevated fire concerns.

Five Day Forecast for Atlanta, Georgia
Today: High 83°F, mostly sunny
Tuesday: High 86°F, sunny
Wednesday: High 87°F, sunny
Thursday: High 87°F, mostly sunny
Friday: High 90°F, sunny
