According to the National Weather Service, low humidity levels between 30 and 39 percent combined with wind gusts up to 25 mph are increasing the risk for rapid fire spread across central Maryland and northern Virginia. Across Baltimore, Columbia, and surrounding communities, the risk is highest in dry fields, wooded edges, and areas with dead vegetation. Even small sparks from equipment or vehicles can start fires that spread quickly in these conditions. Avoid parking on dry grass and delay any yard work that could produce sparks.
At the same time, a warming trend is building. Temperatures climb to near 80°F today, then surge to 87°F Tuesday and peak near 90°F by Wednesday. That combination of warmth and dry air will keep fire concerns elevated through midweek.
