Pontiac, MI – A fatal shooting in a residential driveway led to a swift arrest within hours, authorities said.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 2:15 p.m. Saturday to the 100 block of Crystal Lake Drive in Pontiac for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, deputies found a man lying in a driveway with a gunshot wound to the back.
The victim was later identified as 28-year-old Kevonte Javon Smith of Pontiac. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said a 36-year-old Pontiac man allegedly shot the victim during an apparent robbery. The suspect fled the area but was located and arrested about three hours later at a location on Spokane Drive.
Authorities said the suspect was on probation for a prior drug conviction and had previously served prison time for an unarmed robbery conviction in 2016. Detectives expect to present the case to prosecutors in the coming days for formal charges.
Witnesses told investigators the suspect ran from the scene following the shooting. A K9 unit and drones were used during the search. Detectives also recovered the suspected weapon and clothing linked to the incident.
Officials said the two men knew each other. The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident may raise safety concerns for residents and commuters in the area following the daytime shooting.
