Portage, MI – A house fire on Frederick Lane destroyed a residence Sunday afternoon, injuring one firefighter and displacing the occupant.
According to the Portage Department of Public Safety, crews responded around 9:30 p.m. Sunday to a reported structure fire at 4410 Frederick Lane. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire throughout the home, with flames extending into the roof.
Crews launched an aggressive interior attack while conducting a primary search to ensure no one remained inside. Officials said the sole occupant was home at the time but was able to evacuate safely before firefighters arrived. No civilian injuries were reported.
During firefighting operations, one firefighter sustained minor injuries and was evaluated and treated at the scene by Life EMS. The firefighter did not require transport.
Authorities said the home is considered a total loss due to the fire. Multiple agencies assisted, including Comstock, Pavilion Township, and Oshtemo Township fire departments, while Portage police handled traffic control and assisted with the investigation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though officials said it does not appear suspicious at this time.
The incident may impact nearby residents and commuters due to emergency response activity in the area.
