Pendleton, OR – Drivers across Central Oregon could face rapidly worsening conditions by Tuesday afternoon as heavy snow and gusty winds move into the east slopes of the Cascades, reducing visibility and covering roads in a matter of hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through late Wednesday night for elevations above 4,000 feet. Snowfall totals could reach up to 10 inches, with wind gusts as high as 45 mph.

Communities including Sisters, Camp Sherman, Sunriver, and La Pine sit in the primary impact zone, where bursts of moderate to heavy snow may lead to sudden drops in visibility below a quarter mile. Roads like U.S. 20 and OR-58 could become snow-covered quickly, especially on higher terrain and exposed stretches.

Gusty winds may snap tree branches, creating additional hazards and the potential for isolated power outages. Drivers are urged to delay travel or carry tire chains, emergency supplies, and extra clothing if heading into higher elevations.

Conditions are expected to intensify Tuesday evening, with the most disruptive travel likely overnight into Wednesday. Additional advisories or warnings could be issued as the storm approaches and confidence increases.
