Nassau County, NY – A rear-end crash on the Southern State Parkway injured a state trooper and disrupted early morning traffic Sunday.

According to the New York State Police, the collision occurred around 5:43 a.m. on the eastbound Southern State Parkway just west of Exit 14. Troopers had positioned marked patrol vehicles to assist with traffic control in a hazardous area when the incident unfolded.

Authorities said that at approximately 5:47 a.m., a gray Jeep Wrangler struck the rear of a marked State Police vehicle. The force of the crash pushed the patrol car from the right lane across the center and into the left lanes. The Jeep then left the roadway and came to rest on the right shoulder.

State Police said both the trooper and the Jeep’s driver were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash caused temporary lane disruptions during the early commute, an area frequently used by Long Island drivers heading to work or school.

Officials emphasized that distracted driving remains a leading cause of crashes statewide and poses serious risks to first responders working roadside incidents. Drivers are reminded to move over, slow down, and remain focused when approaching emergency vehicles.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

This type of incident can impact student commuters and early-shift workers relying on parkway travel during peak morning hours.
