Fort Wayne, Indiana – Drivers across northern Indiana could face sudden downpours and lightning delays during the Tuesday evening commute as storm chances surge and warmer air fuels instability across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, temperatures in the mid to upper 70s will hold through midweek, creating conditions favorable for scattered showers and thunderstorms. The agency flags Tuesday evening into the overnight hours as the most active window, with storm coverage reaching up to 60% and the potential for stronger cells.

Cities including Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Elkhart may see brief heavy rainfall, reduced visibility under 1 mile, and wind gusts topping 30 mph during passing storms. Corridors like I-69, I-469, and U.S. 30 could see slick pavement and sudden slowdowns, especially after sunset Tuesday. Isolated storms may also redevelop Wednesday afternoon, extending impacts into the midweek commute.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, keep devices charged, and avoid non-essential travel during active storms. Lightning and brief street flooding remain the primary concerns, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Unsettled conditions linger through Wednesday evening, and additional advisories or warnings may be issued as storm timing becomes clearer.
